RFI Hausa Journalist Ahmed Abba Released From Jail

RFI Hausa reporter Ahmed Abba who was convicted to 10 years imprisonment have been released from jail, after being acquitted from some charges by the military court in Yaounde yesterday Friday December 22nd, 2017.

Ahmed Abba was arrested on July 30th 2015, in Maroua, while covering reports on the Boko Haram war. He was accused of "non denunciation of terrorism" and "laundering of the proceeds of terrorist acts".

On Monday April 24th 2017, he was found guilty and sentenced to  10 years imprisonment with a fine of 55 million F CFA to be paid to the Cameroon Government.

His team of lawyers led by Barrister Charles Tchoungang promised after his conviction that the battle had not yet ended, and that they would appeal the decision.

They made the appeal, and the court acquitted Ahmed Abba yesterday, but gave him 24 months imprisonment for "non denunciation". He had already spent 29 months in jail, making his exit ticket out of jail very easy.

The visibly happy Ahmed told press last night that 'he was very happy'. " I am very happy. I am very very happy to be free on the eve of Christmas. I am presently in the hotel with my boss Yves Rocle(Director of RFI), my lawyers and colleague Polycarp Essomba. It is a Christmas gift. The RFI family has done a lot for me. They gave me so much support. All the international community and Cameroonians of the press helped me a lot. Thanks to their support, I was able to stand strong". He said.
