Melania Trump played the sartorial diplomacy game at a state dinner in Beijing, China on Thursday. The first lady attended the event at the Great Hall of the People wearing a satin floor-length gown in a traditional cheongsam silhouette.
From Alessandro Michele’s Fall 2016 Gucci Ready-to-Wear collection, the black piece features pink and green floral embroidery as well as other figures throughout the nature-inspired motif. For some extra flair, the dress has magenta mink cuffs as well as a high leg slit.

Trump is on a five-country trip through Asia traveling to Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines.
She paired the dress, which Margot Robbie actually previously wore to the Legend of Tarzan premiere in June 2016, with a pair of bubblegum pink Manolo Blahnik heels.

The origins of the cheongsam, also known as a qipao or a mandarin dress, trace back to the 17th century, but the modern version originated in the 1920s and is form-fitting.
Trump’s fellow first lady, Peng Liyuan, wife of China’s President Xi Jinping, opted for something similar with her black sheer topper embroidered with poppies overlaying a deep red satin dress.
