Steve Bruce: The “problem” Aston Villa have when trying to sign players from Man Utd or Chelsea

Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce has admitted that his team’s status as a Championship team has hampered his chances of signing players on loan from Premier League clubs.

Bruce has added plenty of experience to his squad this summer with John Terry, Glenn Whelan, Ahmed Elmohamady and Christopher Samba all making the move to Villa Park.

However, he has been foiled in his attempts to sign younger players on loan with targets such as Tammy Abraham, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Izzy Brown making moves to Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Brighton respectively instead.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail, Bruce said: “We’ve missed out on a few. The problem is, the big clubs like Chelsea and United (among others) want their players to be playing in the Premier League to see how they perform.”

During his previous spells in the Championship with the likes of Birmingham City and Hull City, Bruce used the loan market extremely effectively by signing players who helped him achieve promotion.

He guided Birmingham to promotion in 2007 with the assistance of Nicklas Bendtner, Fabrice Muamba and Seb Larsson all of whom joined on loan from Arsenal, while Hull’s playoff winning team in 2016 contained Chuba Akpom and Isaac Hayden, also from Arsenal.
Bruce added: “One or two loan options is always a key. When I was Hull, we used the loan market very well and even last year we saw how David Wagner at Huddersfield used it well.
“They had two, three, four players and it helped them a lot.”

One player that the Villains have managed to bring in on a temporary basis is Sam Johnstone with the goalkeeper re-signing on a season-long loan deal after impressing last season
