Growing Tension Between Cameroon And Nigeria, As Nigeria Accuses Cameroon Of Killing 97 Nigerian Fishermen In The Bakassi Peninsula

Reports say the Nigerian Parliament is investigating reports that Cameroon killed 97 Nigerian fishermen in the Bakassi Peninsula which Nigeria ceded to Cameroon last week.

Sources reveal that the killings happened last week, when a Cameroonian Paramilitary Unit was enforcing a 100 000 F CFA fishing tax on the fishermen.

Nigerian Interior Minister Abdulrahman Dambazau says Cameroon is breaching an agreement to protect its citizens.

BBC Nigerian Reporter Narizu Mikailu says survivors of the attack have been arriving back in Nigeria's Capital Abuja with injuries, and the Nigerian Lower Parliament has resolved to investigate reports of the 2005 Green Tea Agreement between the two countries, to protect citizens of the ceded areas from harm.

five-year UN-backed transition period was put in place exempting the area’s residents, many of them Nigerian fishermen, from paying tax.

Earlier this week, Nigeria summoned the Cameroonian ambassador to lodge a formal protest note
Cameroon took control of oil-rich Bakassi in 2008 after an International Court of Justice ruling, ending years of border skirmishes.
The Cameroon government is yet to comment on the allegations.
