Algeria Says It Is Ready To Take Over The Organisation Of The 2019 African Cup Of Nations From Cameroon

A few days ago, we reported that Angela Quintal, African Program Coordinator for the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) had written to the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Ahmad Ahmad to withdraw the rights of Cameroon from hosting the 2019 Edition of the African Cup of Nation, if they do not release all journalists arrested in connection with the anglophone crisis.

As if an answer to the prayer of other African countries dreaming to host this once in a life time event, Algeria has publicly made known its interest of taking the competition from Cameroon to Algeria if the slightest opportunity presents itself.

During a Press Conference on Saturday July 8 2017, at the Centre Technique National de Sidi Moussa in Algeria, Kheireddine Zetchi, President of the Algerian Football Federation said; "We are following up the file of an eventual transfer of the competition from Cameroon to Algeria . If the opportunity presents itself, Algeria will be a candidate to host the 2019 African Cup of Nation. Unless otherwise, this edition of the competition is still in Cameroon".

Algeria had shown interest in hosting the just ended 2017 TOTAL AFCON, before CAF decided that Gabon should be given the pride of place. Inside sources at the CAF says, Cameroon might lost the privilege to host this Prestigious African Football event because of its delay in completing infrastructural projects, relating to the event.

The 2021 and 2023 editions of the competition will be hosted by Ivory Coast and Guinea respectively, and there is also a probability that some changes might be put in place, because Zambia too is putting pressure on CAF to have the 2021 Edition on its own soil.

'I spoke about Algeria's interest to host the 2019 AFCON with CAF'S new President Ahmad Ahmad, during the FIFA's 67th Congress that recently took place in Manama-Bahrain. The discussion was fruitful. I saw him eager to bring in new blood into the African football unlike his predecessor Issa Hayatou who was there for 29 years'. Zeetchi concluded.
