Divers Who Went In Search Of Late Bishop Jean Marie Benoit's Corpse, Says They Want Their Share

Ebebda traditional divers and fishermen, who were contracted to search the body of the late Bishop of Bafia, are holding authorities on their throats, to honour the engagements they took before the guys dived deeper into the River Sanaga.

The corpse of the Prelate was found on the Friday June 2, 2017 in the Sanaga River that flows through Ntsang village in Monatele of the Lekie Division. Preliminary investigation revealed that the bishop was killed and thrown into the water, so that his death looks like suicide.

Before his body was discovered, fourteen (14) local divers were contracted by the Mayor of Ebebda on Wednesday 31st May, 2017, when it was discovered that His Lordship Jean Marie Benoit Bala was missing.  The divers were promised some incentives by the administrative authorities, but when the body of the prelate was found, the authorities forgot about their engagements.

'For three days we left our families and went in search of the bishop, and today, no one is looking at us, whereas the man of God has been found. I was thinking the authorities were going to see us as promised. They have all left, and we don't know where to go and complain now'. Adamou Doba, father of five and group leader of the divers told 'le Messager' newspaper, reporting the story.

The paper further covers that these fourteen men actively participated in the search of the late bishop for 72 hours, keeping their part of deal, but as usual, the administrative authorities failed them, and they are very unhappy about it.

'They shouldn't treat us as if we are half-men, after such an important mission. The next time they come to meet us for any service, we won't be available to collaborate with them'. A sand digger who was in the group complained.

According to the paper, the Mayor of Ebebda Syrinus Awono had assured the men that the government had given him everything he needed to make the search produce result, but unfortunately at the end of the search mission, 'he only gave us one plate of food for 500 F CFA each, and a bottle of beer or soft drink'. The group leader lamented.
